Angélina et Luigi sont de retour à Saint-Lizier, après un pèlerinage à Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle. La belle costosida, qui est enceinte, retrouve son fils Henri (officiellement son filleul), son père, et aussi sa chère demoiselle Gersande de Besnac. En son absence qui a duré plusieurs mois, une nouvelle sage-femme s’est installée près de la cité, mais peu à peu, des patientes reviennent frapper à la porte d’Angélina. Parallèlement, Guilhem Lesage découvre que le petit Henri de Besnac est bien son fils. Cette nouvelle le bouleverse et il demande à rencontrer Angélina et Luigi, afin de les supplier de lui laisser voir et connaître l’enfant. Par malheur, quelqu’un surprend la conversation et la rapporte à une femme qui depuis longtemps veut la perte de la belle Angélina. Alors qu’elle prévoit de quitter l’Ariège pour la Lozère, afin de s’installer dans le château des Besnac, Angélina est arrêtée, tout comme Rosette, à cause d’un avortement pratiqué sur cette dernière quelques mois auparavant. Les jeunes femmes sont emprisonnées, menacées des pires sanctions. Ce coup du sort jette la consternation dans la famille, qui ignorait tout de ce drame. Les deux jeunes femmes connaissent la paille sale d’un cachot, sans grand espoir d’échapper à une lourde peine. Et lorsque le procès a lieu, plusieurs personnes témoignent en faveur d’Angélina. Feront-ils pencher la balance de la justice en sa faveur? Rien n’est moins sûr.

Ce troisième et dernier tôme de la série Angélina met un point final à cette saga d’une autre époque.

The Winds of Dawn

Angelina and Luigi have returned to Saint-Lizier after a pilgrimage to Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle. The lovely and pregnant midwife reunites with her son Henri (who is really her godson), her father and her dear attendant, Gersande de Besnac. During Angelina’s absence of several months, a new midwife has taken up practice near the city; however, Angelina’s business picks up once again as new patients begin knocking at her door. Meanwhile, Guilhem Lesage finds out that Henri de Besnac is his own son. Devastated by the news, he requests a meeting with Angelina and Luigi, where he begs them to see his son and become acquainted with him. Unfortunately, their conversation is overheard and reaches the ears of a woman who longs for the demise of Angelina. As Angelina plans to leave Ariège to stay in the Besnac castle in Lozère, she and Rosette are arrested for an abortion she performed on the young woman several months before. Both women are jailed and threatened with severe punishment. Unaware of the tragic events, Angelina’s family is devastated. Both young women must now live in filthy conditions without much hope of escaping with less than a harsh sentence. When the trial begins, many people plead in favour of Angelina. Will it be enough to tip the scales of justice for her? Nothing could be less certain.

This third and final volume of the Angelina series brings an end to this spellbinding saga from another era.
