Lorsqu’elle apprend que son père Maurice est malade, Isabelle décide de prendre la route vers Saint-Étienne, à plusieurs heures de Montréal, pour lui rendre visite. Accompagnée de son amoureuse Madeleine, la jeune femme subit un choc en arrivant lorsque sa mère Thérèse lui annonce que son père est décédé il y a quelques jours. Les circonstances troublantes de ce décès et le comportement erratique de sa mère amènent Isabelle à soupçonner que quelque chose ne tourne pas rond dans cet ancien village forestier isolé et déprimé économiquement.
