About

The Diefenbunker was an active military base for 32 years throughout the Cold War. We invite you to learn why we remember as you explore Cold War stories at the Diefenbunker.

This Veterans’ Week (November 5–11), the Diefenbunker honours those who have served and those who continue to serve, including Indigenous veterans on November 8.

Through special programming, we reflect on the impact of conflict and work towards a more peaceful future.

November 5 to 8 and 10 to 11

Visit the Bank of Canada Vault for a space of reflection and remembrance.

Discover stories of Indigenous veterans through our exhibition An Inuit Story: The DEW Line(opens in new tab).

Watch oral history videos(opens in new tab) of Cold War veterans, on display outside the Machine Room.

Hear museum volunteers share their stories and personal experiences from serving during the Cold War.

November 10

In addition to our extended experience guided tours, two special tours will be available. Spots are limited and tickets must be reserved in advance. Reserve your tickets.(opens in new tab)

Curatorial Tour, 12:30 – 2:30 p.m.

Discover secret history of the Diefenbunker — what came before it, and once-classified plans for its operations in the event of a nuclear attack on Canada. You will explore historical context surrounding the Cold War that led to the construction of the Central Emergency Government Headquarters (the Diefenbunker) and will learn about Canada’s preparations for a nuclear war that were never realized, including the plans for after a bomb hit and the implications on citizens across the country.

Collections Tour, 12:30 – 2:00 p.m.

Discover the Diefenbunker as Canada’s most significant Cold War artifact. You will explore the bunker’s unique architectural features that were designed for surviving a nuclear attack and will learn about how we preserve the facility today for the continued enjoyment of museum visitors.

November 11

Enjoy free general admission to the museum. Reserve your tickets.(opens in new tab) Guided tours will not be offered.

A moment of silence will be observed at 11 a.m. throughout the museum. After this time, we invite you to lay your poppy on our wreath in the Bank of Canada Vault. The wreath will be brought to the West Carleton War Memorial at the end of the day.

The museum will be closed on November 9.
